Here's my serious response to your response (just my thoughts): There are two reasons punishment is useful: minimization of future harm and deterrence. Let's say Hitler genuinely realized he had done wrong and we could reasonably expect he would be a force for good from now on. This means that punishing him by, for example, sending him to jail or killing him wouldn't prevent any future harm.
